USA may ratify UN Law of the Sea
15 mai 2009

The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) was concluded in 1982 and came into force ... 22 years later in 2004. At present, 157 countries are parties to the Convention. The USA figure among the 22 countries that have signed but have yet to ratify the Convention, but the tide of opinion in the US Senate is starting to change as some US legal experts argue that, without ratification, their country will lack influence on the ongoing codification of maritime law. In addition American business needs legal assurance allowing us to compete with foreign companies for marine resources. Finally the US Navy is looking for a guarantee of safe passage through all seaways.
