The 39th Congress will be held in Venice at the kind invitation of the Government of Italy, a founding Member State of CIESM. It will take place at the historical Palazzo del Cinema, situated on Lungomare Marconi on the Lido. The Venetian Lido is a thin island, 12 km long, which protects the Venice Lagoon from the sea. Since the early 17th century, it has been a selected destination for many poets and writers (Lord Byron, Thomas Mann, Hugo Pratt, ...). Since their first edition in 1919 (Constitutive Assembly, Madrid, Spain), CIESM Congresses constitute the most representative marine scientific events in the Mediterranean/ Black Sea Region. They bring together hundreds of researchers from all shores of the Basin and from oversea, who apply the latest scientific tools to understand, monitor and protect a fast-changing, highly impacted sea. The Congress offers invaluable opportunities for sharing new ideas among peers, for developing new projects, and for making invaluable contacts. The organizing Committee traditionally spares no effort in providing the most suitable environment where all these opportunities can materialize. The CIESM Congress shall cover a broad diversity of marine disciplines, corresponding to the six Scientific Committees of the Commission. Papers will be particularly welcome around the themes detailed here. It will be officially opened by the President of CIESM, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, following welcome speeches by high Representatives of the Host Government. The outline of the programme will be presented here at the end of June and in more and more details thereafter. It will comprise morning panels on hot issues concerning marine research and related sectors such as marine transport and economics. The afternoon committee sessions will present hundreds of oral and poster communications. Congress participants are each responsible for covering the costs of their participation. We encourage you, if necessary, to look for national funding, starting for example with local Chambers of Commerce. Paper Submission Deadline => 15 November 2009 _________________________
