* cartography of demersal resources in Italian seas ;
* ecologic study of symbiont luminous bacteria of mesopelagic fish in the Straits of Messina ;
* evaluation of demersal resources from Cape Suvero (Calabria) to Cape S. Vito (Sicily) ;
* hydrodynamism of the Straits of Messina and influence on the trophic levels of the planktonic biocenosis ;
* integrated study of the main trophic components in the water-sediment system ;
* international bottom trawl survey in the Mediterranean (MEDITSIT) ;
* comparison of fish-farming experimentation : breeding of Seriola dumerilii in different contained environments (tank - cage) ;
* recent history of Mediterranean water masses analyzed through the determination of in-situ microbial activity ;
* setting up of an integrated system comprising the management of data and monitoring by automatic systems of characteristic parameters of the marine environment

Brief description of vessels and on board scientific equipment :
M/fo 'Delfo' is equiped for continuous monitoring campaigns of chemical-physical parameters of surface waters and it's equiped with radar, GPS and 12V DC/220 AC static convertor group ;
M/b 'Furetto' is equiped as a fishing boat for the catch and transport of live samples

* continuous system for temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, fluorescence measurements ;
* coulter particle counter ;
* elementary analyser of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen ;
* fish-farming installation with 6 open air tanks to a total volume of 400 m, 2 tanks with electronic photoperiod control, hatchery, laboratories for feed and algae culture ;
* laboratory precision salinometer ;
* t-fish for continuous monitoring and sampling of the 0 to 25 meters depth layer ;
* various types of oceanographic probes

Capacity and brief description of library
the Institute has a library of about 2000 volumes complete with important publications of notable scientific and historic importance on the principal oceanographic expeditions carried out from the last century onward, it possesses about 100 collections of scientific journals, of which 25 are dated up to 1997
