Great jellyfish stranding along Italian coastlines
Adapted from La Stampa, 21 June 2009

Thousands of by-the-wind sailor jellyfish (Velella velella), a blue jelly harmless to humans, were washed off the entire coastline of Liguria, in the north west of Italy. Two weeks earlier, a giant swarm of Velella, 10 km long, was observed just off the north coast of Corsica. Most of these jellyfish were pushed by the winds and currents towards the Ligurian shores that became all blue, said Ferdinando Boero, professor at the University of Salento and one of the major experts of jellyfish in Italy. These observations represent the very first results of the Italian campaign “Occhio alla Medusa” as part of the International Monitoring Programme JellyWatch, recently launched by the Mediterranean Science Commission presided by Prince Albert II of Monaco. For this campaign a poster showing 14 jellyfish species (five stingers and nine harmless) has been widely distributed in Italy. People observing jellyfish are asked to send their records by email to Ferdinando Boero along with few, basic information.

Meduse, grande spiaggiamento in Liguria
