GETTING THERE (Do I need a visa to enter Portugal? check details)

The 42nd CIESM Congress will be held at the Estoril Congress Centre, in the municipality of Cascais, one of the most picturesque and artistic cities on the Portuguese coast.

From Lisbon airport to Cascais

If you arrive by air, you will land at Lisbon International Airport (LIS), the main international gateway to Portugal - a very busy hub directly connected to most European, North African, American countries - 7 km east of downtown Lisbon. A CIESM Welcome desk, located in the Arrival Hall of Terminal 1, will be there to help you with directions, if needed.

• CIESM shuttle service from the airport (easiest and fastest):
The local organizing committee will arrange for courtesy shuttle buses tagged "CIESM Congress" to be in place from Sunday 6 October till Monday morning. Strictly reserved for CIESM Congress participants who will have registered for this service in advance, they will take you from the airport to Estoril/ Cascais (count about 40 min - more details on schedule and pick up locations will follow as we approach the congress). The return journey will be organized on Friday. If you cannot take advantage of the service above, you will be able to reach Estoril/ Cascais:

• by taxi: a taxi run from a licensed Airport taxi will cost approximately 40-50€, as Cascais is well outside the urban perimeter of Lisbon.
• by train: the full trip from the airport to Cascais will take you about 1h30 in normal times. You will first need to get to the Lisbon metro station (downtown) “Cais do Sodré”. From there, walk to the train station. Trains to Cascais run from 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 am (approx. every 10 min. on peak hours, every 20 min. otherwise). The train ticket to Estoril or Cascais costs 2.25€ one way. The journey lasts 30-40 minutes depending on the time of the day. For more information on schedule, check the National Railway website Comboios de Portugal.

To reach “Cais do Sodré” station downtown from the airport, you can take:
a) the Metro located in Terminal 1, (see map for directions to the station “Cais do Sodré”); a Metro ticket costs 1.45€ one way; or
b) the Aerobus (Line 1) located at the Arrivals, running every 20 minutes. The Aerobus ticket costs 3.60€ euros one way.

• car rental (rental desk in Terminal 1): the A5 motorway will bring you in about 35 min to Estoril/ Cascais in usual traffic (can be over 50 min in rush hours). The coastal road (along the river Tagus) will offer more sightseeing but is much slower than the A5.

From downtown Cascais to Estoril

The historic center of Cascais is a 20-25 minutes walk along the sea to the Conference Centre. The train ride takes only 5 minutes, plus a 5 min walk to the Centre. Bus lines also link both places.
