Over 100 million sharks are killed every year in the world ocean, a number well above the recovery levels for most shark species. In the Mediterranean Sea, some 34 shark species are either rare or missing, i.e. not seen anywhere in the Basin since at least a decade, the by-catch victims of intensive fishing and bottom trawl.

You will find a description of these rare species by clicking on their icons below. You can also view where they were last seen in the region. By adding your our own records (with photos), or just comments, you will enrich our common knowledge on these sharks, and also help us update their current status. Are they simply rare or locally extinct ? Visit our Forum and reach your own conclusion.
